Joe Duffey is an Irish dance performer, choreographer and instructor from Washington, DC. He has toured extensively with Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games across Mexico, on the West End of London and in the show’s exclusive run on Broadway. Joe has had the honor of working with and performing alongside Irish dance legend Michael Flatley prior to his retirement in 2016.
Joe began dancing at age six, and, under the direction of Maureen Berry, TCRG (Director of Teelin Irish Dance in Maryland), expanded his percussive dance technique and learn to push the envelope with choreography. Joe continues to choreograph for the Teelin Irish Dance Company, and has starred in acclaimed stage shows “Portraits of Ireland”, “StepDance”, “Slainte” and “Celtic Storm”. Locally, Joe also performs with IONA – America’s Pan Celtic Band.
Highlights from Joe’s career also include performances at the White House, Kennedy Center, Trafalgar Square, Wembley Arena; with fiddler Eileen Ivers, Irish band Danu and Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” Radio Show. Joe has made TV appearances with the cast of Lord of the Dance on the BBC One Show, ITV’s “This Morning“ and The Graham Norton Show. Joe was a dancer in the hit show Celtic Fyre at Busch Gardens, and in Raglan Road at Walt Disney World. He also worked on an Japanese independent film score with renowned composer Youki Yamamoto at Pinewood Studios in London.
Joe is widely recognized for his dynamic rhythm and high-energy footwork: he was named a 2015 Man of the Year finalist by Irish Dancing Magazine and has been nominated twice for the Rising Star Artist award by the Howard County Arts Council. He has been profiled by the Baltimore Sun, Irish Central, and was featured in an article in the Washington Post, “From a Foggy Bottom coffeehouse to Broadway ‘Lord of the Dance’ gig”.
Joe is committed to sharing his love for the art by engaging future generations of dancers. While not on tour, he is an instructor with the Teelin School of Irish Dance and conducts workshops across North America at venues including the Pickett Academy (Vancouver, BC), Fitzpatrick School of Irish Dance (Doylestown, PA), “Earful of Fiddle” Music & Dance Camp (East Lansing, MI) and at Joy of Motion Dance Center (Washington, DC). Joe is also a certified Pilates instructor, receiving his comprehensive mat certification in the Fuse Pilates method, and has trained the cast of Lord of the Dance in Pilates to maintain the high fitness demands of the show. In Spring 2016, he launched his own style of Pilates designed specifically for Irish dancers called Celticore. Joe is the co-founder of DC-based performance troupe District Irish Dance Company which aims to bring the power, energy & excitement of Irish dance entertainment to the Nation’s Capital. The group presents innovative performances for private & public performances throughout the Washington-area.
Additionally, Joe holds a B.A. in Geography from the George Washington University, adding a global perspective to his dancing career.
